Godspell was conceived by John-Michael Tebelak, who was put off by traditional church services and wanted to infuse the gospels with joy and community. Eventually Stephen Schwartz joined as songwriter, and the show became part of a wave of rock musicals, at a moment when a generation brought up on TV and the electric guitar were invading theater and comedy. Focusing on the story of Jesus, teaching lessons through parables – Often humorous and uplifting – Godspell features well-known songs such as Prepare Ye, Day by Day and By My Side.
When originally staged in the 70s, Godspell was build around the unique talents and gifts of the actors cast in the various roles. Fast forward to 2024 and we feel that this show is the perfect opportunity to showcase the broad range of acting, singing (and even dancing!) talents in a show made up entirely of members from our Breslau Mennonite Church community.
